Let us deal with the question most people arrive with.
Why there is no doctorate at IU
This is not a criticism of IU. It is how German higher education is structured, and IU explains it on its own pages.
In Germany, the right to award doctorates rests with universities. A university of applied sciences may host a doctorate only where it cooperates with a university, because the doctorate right ultimately lies with the universities.
Germany distinguishes between a Universität and a Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften, a university of applied sciences, formerly called a Fachhochschule. The distinction is not about quality; it is about legal function. Universities hold Promotionsrecht, the right to confer doctorates. Universities of applied sciences historically do not, though several German states have begun granting it in specific fields.
IU is a university of applied sciences. So:
- An IU master's degree can qualify you to pursue a doctorate
- The doctorate itself is awarded by a university, not by IU
- A cooperative promotion is possible, where a UAS supervisor works with a university that holds the right
If you have seen a page advertising a "PhD at a German Hochschule", this is the structure sitting behind it, and it is worth understanding before you commit money to anything.
If a doctorate is your goal
IU's own guidance sets out what the German route requires.
Entry
The prerequisite is a successfully completed university degree, including a bachelor's and a master's. The master's should generally be better than 2.5.
A note for international readers, because this number is counterintuitive. German grades run from 1.0 as the best to 5.0 as a fail. "Better than 2.5" therefore means numerically lower than 2.5. A 1.3 is excellent; a 3.0 is weak.
Treat 2.5 as a floor rather than a target. Competitive doctoral positions in Germany generally attract candidates well under 2.0, and an individual supervisor is free to set their own bar.
The two routes
Individual promotion. You find a doctoral supervisor yourself and persuade them of your project. This is the traditional German route and it turns almost entirely on the relationship: you are asking a specific professor to take responsibility for you. A precise, well-argued proposal in their actual area matters far more than a general application.
Structured doctoral programme. You are admitted to a research college where several doctoral researchers work alongside each other. More structure, more peers, more competitive entry.
Registration
You need:
- A university certificate
- An application
- Approval from your supervisor
- An acceptance letter from the doctoral committee
And the standard the work must meet:
The dissertation must make an independent contribution to research.
What IU actually examines: your thesis
The bachelor's and master's thesis is where IU's own assessment sits, and for a master's student it is the most substantial piece of work in the degree.
The master's thesis is described as independent work producing a high-quality project that demonstrates the capabilities and knowledge built across the programme, prepared as a detailed written thesis in line with academic standards.
The colloquium
A colloquium is an oral examination, a compulsory defence, within the framework of a subject-related or final thesis.
So the thesis is defended, not merely submitted. Prepare for it as an examination in its own right: be ready to justify your method, to say what your findings do not show, and to discuss the limitations you identified yourself.
One rule that catches transfer students
Credits can be recognised in full with the exception of final theses, as theses from external colleges or universities are generally not recognised, since the thesis is an elementary part of the degree programme.
If you are transferring in with a completed thesis from elsewhere, you will write a new one. That is worth knowing when you plan your workload, because it is easy to assume the biggest single piece of prior work carries across.
Two things worth knowing about strong work
IU runs a Best Thesis Award, and a Diversity Award for theses dealing with diversity.
More practically:
Graduates whose bachelor's or master's thesis is published in scientific or specialist media receive a publication grant of €500.
If your thesis is good enough to publish, that grant is worth pursuing, and a published thesis is also a genuine asset in a doctoral application.
What to confirm with IU directly
IU does not publish its detailed thesis specifications openly, so ask your programme or the student advisory service for:
- Word count or page limits for your bachelor's or master's thesis
- Formatting: margins, font, line spacing
- Citation style required in your programme
- Submission deadlines and registration for the thesis phase
- Colloquium format: length, presentation expectations, who examines
- The study and examination regulations applying to your intake
- Any similarity check used, and any policy on generative AI
Do not substitute another German institution's figures for these. Programme-level rules vary, and IU's differ from a research university's.
Checklist
If your goal is the thesis in front of you:
- Word count and formatting confirmed with my programme, not assumed
- Citation style confirmed
- Prepared for the colloquium as a defence, not a summary
- Clear that no external thesis will be recognised in its place
If your goal is a doctorate afterwards:
- Master's grade understood against the German 1.0 to 5.0 scale
- Decided between an individual promotion and a structured programme
- Identified universities, not just supervisors, since the degree comes from them
- Checked whether a cooperative promotion with an IU supervisor is possible in my field
- Proposal written for a specific supervisor's actual research area
- Considered publishing the master's thesis, which also unlocks the €500 grant
Where to get help
IU's student advisory service owns the thesis specifications and examination regulations for your programme. For the doctorate, the authority is the university you approach, since that is where the right to award it sits.
If the writing itself is the bottleneck, our thesis writing support covers master's work, and our master thesis help is the closest fit for an IU final project.
