Agder follows the Norwegian model described in our NTNU guide. This page covers what is specific to UiA, including a route that does not exist at most universities.
The degree is a list of approvals
Agder states what the PhD is awarded on, and the phrasing matters:
Approved completion of the organised training component, possibly other approved training or qualifications, an approved trial lecture, an approved dissertation, and a satisfactory disputation.
Five items, each approved separately. There is no single overall verdict that absorbs a weak component; the trial lecture must pass on its own terms, as must the dissertation.
The training component
Normally 30 credits (ECTS), including training in ethics and the philosophy of science.
Ethics and philosophy of science being named explicitly is standard across Norwegian institutions, and it reflects a view that methodological self-awareness is part of doctoral formation rather than an optional extra.
Assessment
| Element | Rule |
|---|---|
| Committee | At least three members, appointed by the faculty on proposals from the department |
| Scope | The dissertation, the trial lecture and the defence |
| Report deadline | Normally no later than three months after receiving the dissertation |
| Public availability | Printed and public at the latest two weeks before the disputation |
| Trial lecture topic | Prescribed, decided by the committee, announced 10 working days ahead |
| Disputation | Public, held at the University of Agder |
Unlike Bergen, which appoints separate committees for the thesis and the trial lecture, Agder uses one committee throughout. The people who read your dissertation set your lecture topic and question you at the defence.
The sequence
- Dissertation submitted and assessed
- Found worthy of defence
- Trial lecture on the prescribed topic
- Trial lecture found satisfactory
- Disputation, in public
The trial lecture gates the disputation. Until it is approved, the defence cannot proceed.
The artistic research doctorate
Agder runs a PhD programme in Artistic Research, alongside one in Fine Arts. These are genuine doctorates, not equivalents or near-misses, and the structure is worth understanding because it inverts the usual weighting.
| Component | Credits |
|---|---|
| Artistic development, as an independent research project | 150 ECTS |
| Academic component | 30 ECTS (mandatory course 25, optional 5) |
| Total | 180 ECTS over three years |
The award rests on five approvals:
- Approved completion of academic research courses
- An approved artistic result
- An approved part of reflection
- An approved essay of assigned topic
- An approved public defence of the artistic PhD result
What the reflection has to achieve
This is the part candidates most often misjudge:
The artistic research work must be accompanied by explicit reflection that allows others to take part in the work method and insight that the artistic research generates.
Read that carefully. The reflection is not documentation of what you made, nor a catalogue essay, nor a defence of the work's quality. It has to make the method and the insight available to someone who was not in the studio. That is a genuinely difficult piece of writing, and it is assessed separately from the artistic result.
The programme is explicit about the balance:
The most important component in this education is an independent work in artistic research combined with a theoretical reflection.
Practice leads; the reflection accompanies it. But both are approved, and an outstanding artistic result with a thin reflection does not complete the degree.
If you are weighing an artistic doctorate, our guides to Hertfordshire, which publishes page counts for poetry and drama, and Symbiosis, which runs a practice-based route in media, show how differently institutions structure the written component alongside practice.
The dr.philos. route
As elsewhere in Norway, UiA retains the dr.philos. for candidates who have not followed an organised programme. Its committee rules are stricter on independence:
Normally at least two members not affiliated with the University of Agder, at least one member with main employment at a foreign institution, both genders represented, and only members with a doctoral degree or equivalent competence.
That is a deliberately more arm's-length panel, which makes sense for a candidate who has not been through the institution's own supervision.
Pre-submission checklist
- Training component of 30 ECTS complete, including ethics and philosophy of science
- Any other training or qualifications formally approved
- Dissertation submitted with three months allowed for the committee report
- Printed copies ready for public availability two weeks before the disputation
- Trial lecture prepared for a prescribed topic with ten working days' notice
- Trial lecture approved before the disputation is scheduled
For an artistic research candidate, additionally:
- Artistic result complete and documented
- Reflection written to convey method and insight, not to describe the work
- Essay on the assigned topic prepared
- 25 ECTS mandatory and 5 ECTS optional coursework completed
Where to get help
Your faculty appoints the committee and runs the closing stage; your department proposes the committee. The PhD handbook linked above is the practical reference for the process, and completed UiA theses are the fastest way to calibrate what is expected in your field.
If the writing is the bottleneck, our thesis writing support works chapter by chapter, and our PhD thesis help covers doctoral work specifically.
