The Oslo PhD: Twenty Credits After Admission, and a Five Year Paper Limit

Oslo, NorwayPublic research
University of Oslo campus

Two Oslo rules catch people who planned their doctorate around someone else's. At least twenty of your thirty credits must be earned after admission, so prior coursework only partly counts. And a published paper cannot normally go into the thesis if it appeared more than five years before you were admitted.

The University of Oslo's doctorate follows the Norwegian model described in our NTNU guide: three years, a credit-bearing educational component, a trial lecture on an assigned topic, and a public disputation with two opponents.

The detail differs in ways that matter, and this page concentrates on those.

The educational component, and the twenty credit rule

Three years of full-time study with an educational component of at least 30 credits, of which at least 20 must be obtained after admission.

That second clause is the one to plan around. Credits earned before you were admitted can count toward the component, but only up to about a third of it. Arriving with a research-methods portfolio from a previous programme does not exempt you.

The component covers:

  • Completion of the research project
  • Training in academic dissemination
  • An introduction to research ethics, the philosophy of science and scientific methods

Dissemination being named explicitly is worth noting. Communicating research is treated as a trainable skill with credits attached, not something assumed to follow from doing the work.

What the thesis has to be

The thesis shall contribute to the development of new scientific knowledge and must achieve international standards with regard to ethical requirements.

Ethics appearing in the statement of standard, rather than only in a separate approval process, is deliberate. A thesis can be methodologically competent and still fall short here.

Article-based theses and the five year rule

Article-based theses are permitted, and two conditions attach.

Co-authorship must be documented:

Candidates submitting co-authored work must provide a signed declaration describing the contributions made to each work by the candidate and each individual co-author.

Note the scope: a description of what each co-author contributed, not merely confirmation that you contributed. That is a harder document to assemble retrospectively, so gather it as papers are accepted rather than at submission.

And papers can be too old:

Published papers cannot normally be used if the publication date precedes the candidate's date of admission by more than five years.

This catches a specific group: researchers who published for some years, left or moved sideways, and later entered a doctoral programme intending to build on that earlier output. Five years before admission is the boundary. If some of your work sits outside it, raise this with your faculty before planning the thesis, not after.

The six year ceiling

A proposed schedule exceeding six years will not be accepted.

And the consequence of the admission period running out:

Following expiry of the admission period, the parties' rights and duties under the doctoral contract cease to exist.

That is a contractual framing rather than a disciplinary one, and it reflects the Norwegian model where the doctorate is a formal agreement between candidate and institution. When it expires, the arrangement simply ends.

Evaluation

Element Rule
Committee At least three members
Scope The thesis, the trial lecture and the public defence
Committee deadline Three months from receiving the thesis
Your right to comment 10 working days after receiving the recommendation

Two copies of the thesis are sent with the application for evaluation.

And a rule worth understanding before you submit:

A submitted thesis may not be withdrawn before a final decision has been reached as to whether it merits a public defence.

So submission is a commitment. If you have doubts, resolve them with your supervisor beforehand; there is no quiet retreat once the thesis is in.

If the thesis is not approved

A thesis that is not found worthy may be resubmitted only six months after the faculty's decision, and only once.

Six months is a floor, not a target, and the single further attempt is the whole allowance. This is the sharpest difference from systems that permit repeated revision cycles.

The closing sequence

Stage Timing at UiO
Thesis publicly available No later than 2 weeks before the defence
Trial lecture title announced 10 working days before the trial lecture
Trial lecture Must be passed before the defence may take place
Public defence Normally within two months of the decision that the thesis is worthy

Do not carry figures between Norwegian universities. UiO publishes the thesis two weeks ahead; NTNU's regulations say three. Both are correct for their own institution. The same caution applies to trial lecture notice.

The trial lecture's purpose

UiO states it plainly:

The purpose is to test the candidate's ability to acquire knowledge of matters beyond the thesis topic, and to impart this knowledge in a lecture setting.

Two abilities, both examined: learning something new quickly, and teaching it. That is why the topic is assigned and why ten working days is the window. Preparing by rehearsing your own research misses what is being assessed.

The committee reports to the faculty on whether the trial lecture merits a pass, and it must be passed before the defence.

The defence

There shall normally be two ordinary opponents. They shall be members of the evaluation committee and are appointed by the faculty itself.

The public defence will be chaired by the dean, or the dean's proxy.

The dr.philos. route

As at other Norwegian institutions, UiO retains the dr.philos., a doctorate for candidates who have not followed an organised PhD programme. It has its own regulations and its own closing procedures. If you are an established researcher without a PhD place, it is a genuine alternative rather than a historical curiosity.

Pre-submission checklist

  • 30 credits in the educational component, with at least 20 earned after admission
  • Research ethics, philosophy of science and methods covered
  • Dissemination training completed
  • If article-based: no paper published more than five years before my admission
  • Signed declaration describing each co-author's contribution to each paper
  • Certain about submitting, since the thesis cannot be withdrawn afterwards
  • Two copies sent with the application
  • Inside the six year schedule limit
  • Ten working days reserved to comment on the committee's recommendation
  • Thesis ready to be public two weeks before the defence
  • Trial lecture prepared as a separate exercise in learning and teaching a new topic

Where to get help

Your faculty appoints the committee, decides whether the thesis is worthy of defence, and appoints the opponents. Your supervisor owns the academic content. The evaluation guidelines linked above set out what the committee is asked to judge, and reading them before submitting is the most efficient preparation available.

If the writing is the bottleneck, our thesis writing support works chapter by chapter, our PhD thesis help covers doctoral work, and our research paper support is relevant for an article-based thesis.
