The Bangalore University PhD: What Is Published, and What to Ask For

Bengaluru, Karnataka, IndiaState university
Bangalore University campus

Bangalore University publishes its doctoral rules in a PhD Ordinance that was not reachable when this guide was written. Rather than fill the gap with figures borrowed from other Indian universities, this page sets out what is verifiable, explains the national framework that definitely applies, and tells you exactly what to obtain from the university and who to ask.

A note on this page before anything else.

Bangalore University publishes a Ph.D. Ordinance that governs everything about its doctorate. At the time of writing, the university's web domains were not resolving, so the ordinance could not be retrieved and read.

Other Indian universities' ordinances are readily available, and it would have been easy to fill this page with their figures. That is exactly what this guide does not do. Coursework credits, publication requirements, examiner numbers and similarity thresholds vary enormously between Indian universities, as the rest of our India set shows: Manipal demands two first-author SCOPUS papers, Symbiosis accepts acceptance letters and softer indexing, Delhi appoints three external examiners where most appoint two. A number borrowed from any of them and labelled "Bangalore University" could send someone down the wrong path for months.

So what follows is what is verifiable, plus the national framework that definitely applies, plus a specific list of what to obtain.

What is verifiable about Bangalore University

The basis of the degree

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall be conferred on the basis of a thesis prepared and submitted for the purpose. The thesis shall embody the result of original research carried out by the candidate.

Where the research happens

In a Post Graduate Department of Studies, or in an institution recognised by the University as a research centre, under the guidance of a Research Supervisor or Supervisors approved by the University.

Two things to verify before you commit: that your intended institution holds current recognition as a research centre, and that your intended supervisor holds current approval. Recognition is granted and withdrawn over time, and an unrecognised centre or unapproved supervisor invalidates the arrangement rather than merely complicating it.

Eligibility

Category Minimum marks
General 55% in a postgraduate degree from a recognised university
SC, ST, Category-I, differently abled 50%
Teachers, librarians and physical education personnel appointed on a regular basis in colleges and University departments prior to 31 March 1992 50%, provided they are continuing in service when the registration application is submitted

That third row is a legacy provision with a precise cut-off date and a continuing-service condition attached. If it might apply to you, check both limbs.

The national framework that does apply

Bangalore University is a state university under UGC regulation, so the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, notified on 7 November 2022, bind it. Those provisions are set out in full in our Manipal guide, and in summary:

Provision Rule
Minimum duration 2 years, excluding coursework
Maximum duration 6 years
Extension Per the institution's statute, not beyond a further 2 years
Relaxation 2 additional years for women candidates and Persons with Disabilities over 40%
Coursework 12 to 16 credits, with at least 4 on Research Methodology
Progress review Presentation to the Research Advisory Committee every six months
Originality Thesis submitted with an originality report, which the supervisor must take into account
Repository Electronic copy deposited with INFLIBNET or the institutional archive before the award is announced, in practice Shodhganga

Remember that UGC sets minimums. Universities routinely impose more, and Bangalore University's ordinance may well do so. Where the ordinance is stricter, the ordinance governs.

What to obtain, and from whom

Go to the university with this list. Ask in writing and keep the replies; a written answer is what you will point to if a requirement is disputed later.

From the PhD section or your department:

  • The current Ph.D. Ordinance, and confirmation of which version applies to your registration
  • How the minimum duration is expressed: from registration, from confirmed registration, or including coursework. This alone can differ by a year between institutions
  • Coursework: credits, courses, attendance requirement and pass marks
  • Publication requirements before synopsis or thesis submission: how many papers, which indexes, whether first authorship is required, and whether acceptance counts rather than publication
  • Similarity or plagiarism threshold, and which software is used
  • Synopsis requirements and timing
  • Thesis format: margins, font, spacing, binding, number of copies
  • Examiners: how many, how appointed, whether external, and what happens on an unsatisfactory report
  • Viva voce arrangements, and whether it is open
  • Whether your research centre and supervisor hold current recognition and approval

From your Research Advisory Committee, once formed: the progress reporting schedule and what each review expects.

Practical points that hold regardless

Some things are true of Indian doctorates generally, and worth acting on while you chase the specifics.

The six-monthly RAC presentation is a UGC requirement, so expect it whatever the ordinance adds. Treat it as a genuine checkpoint rather than a form: a pattern of weak reviews has consequences under the national regulations.

An originality report will be required. UGC mandates one, and adds pointedly that it is not sufficient proof that a thesis is free of plagiarism. A low percentage is evidence, not absolution.

Your thesis will be deposited publicly. Shodhganga hosting happens before the award is announced. If any part of your work is commercially sensitive or heading for a journal, raise it early rather than at deposit.

Publication requirements are the usual binding constraint. Across the Indian universities in this set, what most often determines when a PhD finishes is not the research or the writing but the journal review cycle. Whatever Bangalore University requires, find out in year one rather than year four.

Checklist

  • Obtained the current Ph.D. Ordinance and confirmed which version applies to me
  • Confirmed my research centre holds current University recognition
  • Confirmed my supervisor holds current University approval
  • Clear on how the minimum duration is counted
  • Coursework requirements, attendance and pass marks confirmed
  • Publication requirement confirmed in writing, early
  • Similarity threshold and software confirmed
  • Thesis format and copy requirements obtained
  • Examiner and viva arrangements understood
  • Six-monthly RAC presentations scheduled
  • Within the UGC maximum of six years

Where to get help

The PhD section of the university and your department own the ordinance and the process. Your Research Advisory Committee owns progression. Where a question touches the national framework rather than local rules, the UGC regulations are the authority.

If the writing is the bottleneck, our thesis writing support works chapter by chapter, our PhD thesis help covers doctoral work, and our research paper support is relevant if a publication requirement stands between you and submission.
